**WASHINGTON D.C. -** In a major boost to Ukraine’s defense efforts, President Joe Biden announced Thursday a new $7.9 billion security assistance package for the country, including $5.5 billion in military aid from U.S. stockpiles. The package aims to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and bolster its long-range strike capabilities.

The aid includes a critical component: the deployment of an additional Patriot anti-missile battery and additional Patriot missiles. This follows the successful deployment of a Patriot system in Ukraine, which has played a pivotal role in intercepting Russian missiles and aerial threats. The announcement underscores the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense against ongoing Russian aggression.

The package also features the provision of long-range Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW), enabling Ukraine to engage targets further from the frontlines. Additionally, the U.S. will provide expanded training for Ukrainian pilots operating the F-16, with plans to train 18 more pilots next year. This comes after the successful deployment of F-16s by the Ukrainian Air Force, albeit with a recent incident involving the loss of one of the aircraft in August.

This new aid package will be delivered through two channels: the Presidential Drawdown Authority, allowing for the immediate transfer of U.S. equipment from stockpiles, and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which will fund the acquisition of new equipment and support Ukraine’s defense industrial base.

The announcement comes as President Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, signaling the continued strong U.S. support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion.
