**Cambridge, UK -** Pact, a UK-based startup, has developed a sustainable and scalable biomaterial made from collagen, the primary building block of human skin. Dubbed Oval, this innovative material looks, feels, and ages like traditional leather but without the environmental impact.
Oval is created by combining recycled collagen from old cosmetics with herbal extracts, oils, and minerals. This proprietary process, which Pact is keeping secret, transforms cosmetic-grade collagen into collagen skins that are then enhanced using traditional leather-making techniques.
The company claims that Oval has a significantly lower carbon footprint than traditional textiles and leather, potentially preventing 4.8 million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.
Pact has already secured partnerships with leading fashion houses to explore replacing traditional materials with Oval. The startup has also developed “drop-in” manufacturing technology that allows clients to produce Oval directly within their own supply chains.
“We have poured energy and creativity into our innovations, ensuring they can meet the standards of the world’s most prestigious brands and respect their heritage, whilst also being truly scalable,” said co-founder and CEO Yudí Ding.
Ding, who conceived the idea for Oval during his PhD research at the University of Cambridge, teamed up with physicist Niels Ramay to found the company and bring this leather-like material to market.
Pact has recently opened a new headquarters in Cambridge, including a laboratory and pilot production facility. Fueled by £9 million in funding from investors including Hoxton Ventures, ReGen Ventures, Celsius Industries, and Polytechnique Ventures, the startup is expanding into new industries, including footwear, interiors, and automotive.
Pact’s success highlights the growing potential of biomaterials to replace traditional materials and address environmental concerns. Oval’s unique blend of sustainability and functionality could revolutionize the fashion and manufacturing industries.
