**Ankara, Turkey** – Turkey is stepping up its engagement in Africa, seeking to bolster its influence and trade on the continent. However, the country faces fierce competition from established players like China and Russia, making its path to success challenging.

Since launching its African Initiative Policy in 1998, Turkey has been increasing diplomatic, commercial, and security ties with African nations. This has seen a significant increase in the number of Turkish embassies in Africa, with Turkish Airlines now offering flights to 62 destinations across the continent. Trade between Turkey and Africa has also surged, reaching over $41 billion in 2022.

Ankara’s interest in Africa is driven by its young population, rising demand for goods, and untapped economic potential. Turkey is particularly active in Somalia, where it operates its largest military base abroad and has secured exclusive rights to explore oil and gas in three blocks off the Somali coast. The country plans to send an exploration vessel to the region in the coming months.

Despite these efforts, Turkey has yet to reach its trade-volume targets with Africa. Experts argue that Ankara needs to diversify its trade partners beyond Somalia and Sudan, focusing on countries with stronger economic potential like Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Further complicating Turkey’s ambitions, the country is facing stiff competition from China and Russia, who have been actively investing in Africa for years. China, in particular, has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure projects, while Russia has leveraged its military and political influence to gain a foothold on the continent.

Turkish experts acknowledge the challenges, advocating for greater investment and participation in mega projects to compete effectively with Chinese and Russian initiatives. They argue that a focus solely on imports and exports is not enough to achieve lasting success in the African market.

Turkey’s engagement in Africa remains a work in progress. While Ankara is making strides in increasing its influence and trade, it faces significant challenges from formidable competitors.
