OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab behind ChatGPT, has experienced a wave of executive departures, including Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, and Vice President of Research Barret Zoph.
Murati, instrumental in the development of ChatGPT and Dall-E, announced her departure on Wednesday, citing a desire for personal exploration. McGrew, who joined OpenAI in 2017, plans to take a break after shipping the OpenAI o1 model to the world. Zoph, who joined in 2022, is seeking new opportunities outside of OpenAI.
These exits follow the departures of Chief Scientist and Co-founder Ilya Sutskever in May and Co-founder John Schulman in August, as well as the extended leave of President and Co-founder Greg Brockman. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledges the departures were amicable but emphasizes the need for a leadership transition.
The departures come amidst a period of major changes for OpenAI. The company is in talks to raise $150 billion in funding and is considering a restructuring to potentially offer investors more returns.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, expressed gratitude for the departing executives’ contributions, stating they have “gone above and beyond the call of duty.” He highlighted the company’s commitment to a smooth transition and announced appointments for the newly vacated positions.
Mark Chen will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Research, replacing McGrew. Josh Achiam will become the new Head of Mission Alignment, and Josh Knight will take on the role of Chief Information Security Officer.
The departures and restructuring at OpenAI come at a crucial time for the company, as it navigates the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence field and seeks to secure its position as a leading player. The company’s future direction and leadership team will be key factors in shaping its success in the years to come.
