The deal comes 45 years after the 1979 Three Mile Island accident, a public relations disaster that severely hampered the nuclear industry’s expansion. Though there were no casualties or lingering environmental damage, the incident fueled public fear, exacerbated by the release of the film “The China Syndrome.” This led to a wave of stringent regulations, making the industry significantly more expensive and difficult to operate.
Anti-nuclear activists capitalized on public anxiety, successfully hindering new reactor construction for decades. These groups, often characterized as being “anti-nuclear” rather than “pro-environment,” saw the Three Mile Island incident as a pivotal moment, using it to solidify their stance against atomic energy.
However, the tide may be turning. The Microsoft deal reinforces this trend.
