A new report by the United Nations (UN) predicts a significant shift in global population trends, with the number of humans reaching a peak around the mid-2080s before declining. The report, which analyzed population forecasts for 237 countries, suggests the peak population will be lower than previously estimated.
The decline is primarily attributed to falling birth rates in developed countries. Countries like China, Japan, Thailand, and South Korea are experiencing significant drops in fertility rates, a trend also observed in other parts of the world.
Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, highlights the positive implications of this demographic shift. “The earlier and lower peak is a hopeful sign,” he states. “This could mean reduced environmental pressures from human impacts due to lower aggregate consumption.” However, he cautions that slower population growth won’t eliminate the need for individual efforts to reduce environmental impact.
The report reveals that 63 countries, including China, Germany, Japan, and Russia, have already reached peak population and are expected to see a 14% drop in the next 30 years. Another 48 countries are projected to reach their peak between 2025 and 2054. The remaining 126 countries, including the United States, are expected to continue growing until 2054.
This projected decline marks the first time global population has been predicted to decrease since the 14th century, when the Black Death caused a significant population drop. This time, the decline is driven by conscious choices, and will undoubtedly reshape the way we live and think in the coming century.
