Thu Sep 26 14:15:26 UTC 2024: ## Toyota Drops “Prime” for “Plug-in Hybrid” in Latest Model Lineup
**[City, State] -** Toyota is making a significant change to its naming convention for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The automaker announced that the 2025 Prius Prime and Rav4 Prime will be rebranded as the Prius Plug-in Hybrid and Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid, respectively.
This move aims to simplify the model identification process for consumers, providing a clearer distinction between standard hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The name change will be accompanied by an updated “PHEV” badge on the rear of the Prius Plug-in. The Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid will also lose the blue halo in the Toyota logo found on both the front and rear.
While the name and branding are changing, the specifications and features of the 2025 models remain largely the same. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid will still boast a 13.6 kWh battery and a maximum electric-only range of 44 miles on the SE trim. Similarly, the Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid will retain its 18.5 kWh battery and 42-mile EV range, along with its 6.6 kW charging speed, enabling a full charge in approximately two hours on a Level 2 charger.
This move comes as Toyota continues to prioritize its hybrid vehicle strategy, while adopting a more cautious approach to fully electric vehicles. Though the company has launched the bZ4x EV, it is expected to introduce a three-row electric SUV for the US market soon.
