The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced a series of planned price increases for First-Class postage, set to take effect in July 2025 and continue every January and July thereafter until the end of 2027.
The current price of a First-Class stamp stands at 73 cents. While the exact amount of each future price increase remains unspecified, the USPS has confirmed that the price will not increase in January 2025. The agency attributes this temporary pause to “declining inflation” and a commitment to keeping prices “affordable.”
The USPS has defended its planned increases, pointing out that only a few countries charge less for a stamp. The agency also highlighted the declining use of First-Class mail due to the growth of online communication. The number of letters sent annually has dropped by half in the past decade.
Despite these challenges, the USPS assures the public that it remains focused on cost-saving measures to ensure its services remain accessible. The agency’s plans will ultimately need approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission.
