**WASHINGTON, D.C.** – The House task force investigating assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump held its first hearing on Thursday, focusing on the July 13th shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The hearing comes after a damning interim report from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee detailed planning and security failures that occurred on the day of the shooting.
The task force, led by Chairman Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and ranking member Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.), is investigating how 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to position himself with a weapon so close to the rally, despite being noticed by attendees and local officials. The hearing will feature testimony from key individuals including law enforcement officials, Secret Service agents, and the Allegheny County medical examiner.
“The American people desire and deserve answers,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). “The task force is working around the clock to deliver them.”
The hearing comes amid heightened security concerns following a second alleged assassination attempt on Trump’s life, which was thwarted while the former president was golfing in West Palm Beach, Florida. The task force’s scope was recently expanded to include this incident.
The Senate report highlighted a number of failures, including a lack of clear command structure for security decisions, inadequate coordination, and obstructed views for the sniper team assigned to monitor the area.
Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.), a task force member, stated, “The communication failures on the day of the event were clearly catastrophic [and] led to what we saw happen that day.”
The task force has already sent out numerous requests for information and documents to local, state, and federal officials as they seek to uncover the truth behind the events of July 13th.
