Thu Sep 26 12:46:00 UTC 2024: ## UK Cracks Down on Russian LNG Tankers, but Challenges Remain

The UK has taken a significant step in the ongoing effort to sanction Russia by targeting tankers carrying Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). This marks the first time the UK has sanctioned such vessels since the invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has announced sanctions against five LNG tankers and two companies involved in the LNG sector. These tankers were previously insured by British companies but have been cut off by insurers following US sanctions. The FCDO is also examining further sanctions on other LNG tankers carrying Russian LNG.

This move comes after a Sky News report earlier this year revealed that British companies, including Seapeak, are still involved in the transportation of Russian gas from Siberia to Europe. While many other Russian natural resource exports are declining, the Kremlin is aiming to increase its global LNG market share significantly.

Sanctioning these vessels is a complex issue, as they supply large amounts of gas to Europe, which has not yet sanctioned Russian gas. The UK’s role as a major player in the shipping sector means it both benefits from the trade and has the capacity to influence it.

The FCDO is expected to utilize its new powers to sanction individual vessels again in the coming months. While this crackdown is a significant step, the challenges of balancing energy needs with sanctions remain, highlighting the complexity of international efforts to isolate Russia.
