**Austin, TX -** Brandon Espy’s feature film debut, “Mr. Crocket,” expands upon his 2022 short of the same name with mixed results. While the film boasts impressive practical gore effects and puppetry, it ultimately falls flat due to a pedestrian script and uninspired execution.
Set in 1994, “Mr. Crocket” follows Summer, a widowed mother struggling to cope with her son Major’s grief and temper tantrums. A magical mailbox delivers a VHS tape of the children’s show “Mr. Crocket’s World,” and soon, the sinister host himself emerges from the television, kidnapping Major and forcing Summer to confront her demons.
Espy heavily borrows from the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, relying on tired tropes and predictable plot devices. Despite its decent runtime, the film lacks the originality and excitement that would elevate it beyond mediocrity.
However, “Mr. Crocket” does shine in its visual effects. The practical gore and puppetry are impressive, with standout sequences like a gruesome homage to Greta’s death in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 5.”
Ultimately, “Mr. Crocket” is a missed opportunity. Espy’s lack of originality and reliance on familiar horror tropes overshadow the film’s technical strengths. Despite its impressive effects, the film’s predictable plot and lackluster execution make it a disappointing outing for the filmmaker.
“Mr. Crocket” had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest and will be released on Hulu on October 11.
