Fri Sep 27 16:24:42 UTC 2024: ## Himachal Pradesh Government Backtracks on Mandatory ID Display for Food Stall Owners

**Shimla, India** – The Himachal Pradesh government has distanced itself from a statement made by its Public Works and Urban Development Minister, Vikramaditya Singh, regarding mandatory ID display for food stall owners in the state.

Minister Singh had previously stated that he had issued orders requiring food stall owners to display their identity cards at eateries and stalls. However, a government spokesperson clarified on Thursday that no such decision has been made and a committee is currently reviewing the street vendor’s policy.

The committee, chaired by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan, includes both Congress and BJP legislators and is examining suggestions from various stakeholders. The spokesperson emphasized that a final decision will only be made after a thorough evaluation of the committee’s recommendations by the cabinet.

Minister Singh, in a subsequent statement, clarified that his previous comments were made in his capacity as Urban Development Minister and not as a member of the committee. He added that his statement was based on certain guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and some High Courts.

The government’s decision to backtrack comes just a day after the Uttar Pradesh government made it mandatory for food outlets across the state to display the name and address of operators, proprietors, and managers.

The Himachal Pradesh government’s decision highlights the ongoing debate over street vendor regulations and the need for a balanced approach that addresses concerns about food safety and hygiene while also ensuring fair treatment and economic opportunities for vendors.
