**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lankan batsman Kamindu Mendis continues to make waves in Test cricket, achieving the incredible feat of scoring 1000 runs in just his 13th innings. This places him third on the all-time list for the fastest to reach this milestone, equaling the legendary Don Bradman.
Mendis, just 25 years old, reached the 1000-run mark on Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand in Galle. He was unbeaten on 182 when Sri Lanka declared their first innings at a mammoth 602/5.
Mendis’s achievement is even more remarkable considering he achieved it in only 8 Test matches. This places him alongside Bradman as the only players to reach 1000 runs in fewer than 10 Tests. He also surpassed Vinod Kambli’s record for the fastest Asian batsman to reach the milestone.
Furthermore, Mendis has scored a half-century in each of his first eight Test matches, a feat only achieved by Kumar Sangakkara (nine consecutive Tests) in Sri Lanka’s history.
“Kamindu Mendis – becoming of greatness,” tweeted former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, echoing the sentiment of millions of cricket fans who are captivated by his meteoric rise.
Mendis’s stellar performance has given Sri Lanka a strong platform to potentially secure a third consecutive Test victory. His 182, along with centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis, helped Sri Lanka dominate the first innings.
With an average of 91.27, Mendis is now ranked second in the list of batters with a minimum of 1000 runs in Test cricket, trailing only Bradman’s legendary 99.94 average. His exceptional form and record-breaking feats have cemented him as one of the most exciting talents in the world of cricket.
