**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka’s rising star Kamindu Mendis has etched his name in the record books, equalling the legendary Don Bradman’s achievement by becoming the joint second-fastest batsman to reach 1,000 Test runs.
The 25-year-old achieved this milestone on Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand, reaching 1,004* runs in just 13 innings. This feat ties him with Bradman for the second-fastest in history, only behind Herbert Sutcliffe (England) and Everton Weekes (West Indies) who both reached the milestone in 12 innings.
Mendis’s record-breaking performance extends beyond the 1,000-run mark. He also became the fastest Asian to reach five Test centuries, surpassing Pakistan’s Fawad Alam who achieved it in 22 innings.
Furthermore, Mendis is now the joint-fourth fastest batsman in history to reach five Test centuries, sharing the record with Bradman and West Indies legend George Headley.
On Day 1 of the Galle Test, Mendis also set a new world record for the most successive fifty-plus scores since debut, with eight consecutive scores of 50 or more runs since his debut against Australia in 2022.
Mendis’s remarkable performances have cemented his status as one of the most exciting young batsmen in the world. His consistent brilliance has ignited hopes for a new era of Sri Lankan cricket, and his achievements against New Zealand have further showcased his exceptional talent.
