**Mumbai, India:** Actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar has revealed intriguing details about the making of the iconic Hindi film “Sholay,” shedding light on a little-known aspect of the film’s production.
Pilgaonkar, who had a small role in the film, shared that director Ramesh Sippy had a second unit dedicated to filming action sequences that didn’t involve the main stars. This unit was led by renowned stunt filmmaker Mohammed Ali bhai, alongside action director Azim bhai.
To oversee the second unit, which included Hollywood stuntmen Jim and Jerry, Sippy appointed two assistants: Amjad Khan, who played the iconic Gabbar, and a young Sachin Pilgaonkar.
“Rameshji decided to have a second unit to do action sequences without the main actors,” Pilgaonkar revealed in a recent interview. “He wanted two people to represent him on set since these people came from other countries. At that time, there were only two ‘bekaar’ (useless) people in the unit: Amjad Khan and me,” he joked.
Pilgaonkar explained that this opportunity allowed him to stay on the set even when the main unit wasn’t filming, including during the filming of the iconic train robbery scene near Panvel. “Rameshji was supposed to come only when Dharamji, Amitji, and Hari bhai (Sanjeev) had work. Rameshji shot those portions, and we handled the remaining scenes,” he stated.
This revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes workings of one of India’s most beloved films. It highlights the dedication of the supporting cast and crew who contributed to the film’s enduring legacy.
