**New York, NY** – The United States has accused Russia of engaging in discussions with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels regarding potential weapon transfers. These talks, according to US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking, could significantly alter the conflict and escalate tensions in the region.
Lenderking, speaking at the UN General Assembly, stated that the US has confirmation of ongoing dialogue between Russia and the Huthis, including discussions on weapon transfers. While no confirmed transfers have taken place, the US is sounding the alarm bell to prevent such an eventuality.
“The notion that the Russians would provide the Huthis with lethal weapons is deeply alarming to the countries of the region,” Lenderking stressed.
The potential for Russia to arm the Huthis comes at a time when Moscow is seeking to bolster its own military capabilities amidst its war in Ukraine. This move also coincides with Russia’s strengthening relationships with Iran and North Korea, both under heavy sanctions.
The Huthis, known for their attacks on Red Sea shipping, have been targeting vessels linked to Israel, the United States, and Britain since November. These attacks, which have already resulted in the deaths of four sailors and the sinking of two ships, have disrupted maritime traffic through a vital commercial waterway.
Lenderking highlighted the ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the Houthi attacks, including discussions between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers. The US, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and the Yemeni government, are exploring ways to pressure the Huthis to cease their actions.
“Our preferred outcome is diplomatic,” Lenderking emphasized.
Iran’s role in the Russia-Houthi talks is also being scrutinized, with Lenderking stating that Tehran is constantly seeking ways to support the Huthis.
The potential weapon transfer to the Huthis raises serious concerns about the escalation of the decade-long conflict in Yemen and the wider implications for regional security. The US and its allies are actively working to prevent this scenario and urge a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
