Renowned Italian techno DJ and producer Rino Cerrone has sadly passed away at the age of 52. Cerrone, a key figure in the Neapolitan dance music scene, was known for his pioneering techno style that defined the city’s sound in the early 2000s.
Cerrone’s family announced his passing with immense sorrow, sharing their grief with fans and the music community on his Facebook page. Fellow Neapolitan DJ Joseph Capriati, who considered Cerrone a mentor and friend, also paid tribute to the artist, calling him a true legend and a unique individual.
Cerrone’s musical journey began as a member of the live production ensemble Q-Men, alongside Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono. The group released their first EP through Marco Carola’s Design Music in 1997. Cerrone later founded the influential label Ri’li:s with Mario Manganelli, which nurtured the Neapolitan sound and gave rise to prominent artists like Flavio Diaz, Luigi Madonna, and Markantonio, with whom he collaborated on the Junction Hands project.
Throughout his career, Cerrone established several successful labels, including Loose Records, Unri’li:s, and Saw Recordings. He graced stages at renowned venues and festivals worldwide, captivating audiences with his signature sound until his retirement in 2014.
The Naples techno scene, deeply impacted by Cerrone’s absence, mourned his loss. Capriati, reflecting on Cerrone’s influence, noted that he “started the Neapolitan minimal funky sound, that music is timeless.” He described Cerrone as a hero to the Naples techno community.
Rino Cerrone’s legacy as a visionary artist and a pioneer of the Neapolitan techno sound will continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.
