Thu Sep 26 13:25:24 UTC 2024: ## Shamrock Rovers Manager Criticized for Attacking Referee After Controversial Call, Sparking Referee’s Union Response
Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley has come under fire from the Irish Soccer Referees Society (ISRS) for his scathing criticism of referee Damien MacGraith following a controversial penalty decision in last week’s 1-1 draw against Derry City.
Bradley, visibly frustrated by the penalty awarded to Derry in the closing stages of the match, publicly labeled MacGraith “the worst in the league” and stated that his decision was “terrible.” The penalty, which ultimately salvaged a draw for Derry, was awarded after a perceived foul on Derry attacker Patrick McEleney by Rovers defender Josh Honohan. Replays, however, showed no contact between the two players.
The ISRS has vehemently condemned Bradley’s comments, calling them “personalised vilification” and stating that such criticism “has no place in sport.” The statement emphasized that respect for match officials is crucial and that verbal attacks on individuals are unacceptable.
The incident has sparked debate over the level of criticism directed towards referees and the importance of maintaining respect within the football community.
