**New Delhi:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated three high-performance computing systems, known as PARAM Rudra supercomputers, in Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata. These state-of-the-art facilities will enable Indian scientists to conduct advanced research in fields like physics, earth science, and cosmology.
“These supercomputers will play a crucial role in ensuring that India’s scientists have access to the best facilities,” said PM Modi. “They will be instrumental in driving innovation and development.”
The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), established these systems to cater to the growing computational demands of academia, researchers, MSMEs, and startups.
The PARAM Rudra supercomputers boast applications in various domains including weather and climate forecasting, computational fluid dynamics, bioinformatics, and material science. They also offer artificial intelligence capabilities through machine learning and deep learning frameworks, along with cloud-based computing and storage services.
PM Modi highlighted India’s dedication to scientific advancement, emphasizing the establishment of 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in schools to foster scientific curiosity in young minds. He also mentioned the increased scholarship funding for STEM subjects, indicating a commitment to nurturing future generations of scientists and engineers.
The Prime Minister also emphasized India’s achievements in the space sector, pointing to the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s South Pole and the launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission. India is now preparing for the ambitious Gaganyaan mission, aiming to send a crew of astronauts into orbit and safely return them to Earth by 2035.
Recognizing the importance of the semiconductor sector in India’s economic growth, PM Modi noted the government’s approval of five semiconductor units in the country, with two already under construction and the remaining three commencing soon. These units represent a significant investment of nearly Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
The inauguration of the PARAM Rudra supercomputers signifies India’s commitment to bolstering scientific research and innovation, positioning itself as a global leader in technological advancement.
