Thu Sep 26 18:53:47 UTC 2024: ## India Takes Giant Leap in Computing with Launch of Three Supercomputers
**New Delhi, September 26, 2024:** India has taken a significant stride towards self-reliance in computing with the launch of three indigenously developed supercomputers, named Param Rudra, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. These supercomputers, valued at Rs 130 crore, have been deployed in Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata to facilitate cutting-edge scientific research across various fields.
The launch comes as part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which aims to provide the country with advanced computing infrastructure. The Param Rudra supercomputers, incorporating the latest hardware and software technologies, boast a large portion of their components being manufactured and assembled in India.
The supercomputers are capable of handling complex calculations and simulations at high speeds, making them valuable tools for research in fields such as weather forecasting, climate modeling, drug discovery, materials science, and artificial intelligence.
In Delhi, the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) will leverage the Param Rudra for research in material science and atomic physics. The S.N. Bose Centre in Kolkata will focus on areas including physics, cosmology, and earth sciences, while the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune will use the supercomputer to explore astronomical phenomena such as Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of technological advancement and high-computing capability in various sectors, emphasizing that India’s share in this field “should not be in bits and bytes but in terabytes and petabytes.” He expressed confidence that the launch of these supercomputers signifies India’s progress towards achieving its technological goals at an accelerated pace.
