**Markham, Ontario** – York Regional Police are investigating a series of incidents involving rocks being thrown at moving vehicles in Markham, culminating in a serious collision that left two people with life-threatening injuries.
The investigation began after a two-vehicle crash on September 20th, where a 61-year-old man driving westbound on Major MacKenzie Drive was struck by a fist-sized rock thrown through his windshield. The driver lost control and collided with a vehicle waiting at an intersection. Both the driver and his passenger, a 62-year-old woman, sustained severe injuries and were transported to hospital. The woman’s condition stabilized after several days, while the man remains in critical condition.
Police have since learned that similar incidents occurred in the same area prior to the crash. On the same evening, two drivers reported having their windshields struck by rocks while traveling north on Highway 48. Both sustained minor injuries.
Further investigation revealed that several similar incidents took place in the week prior, and social media chatter suggests even earlier occurrences.
“It’s concerning, troubling, horrific,” said OPP Det.-Insp. Sean Chatland. “Here are two people who are just travelling on our roadways, which are supposed to be safe, and all of a sudden a projectile comes through the windshield and strikes the operator of the vehicle.”
Local residents expressed shock and concern over the incidents, highlighting the peaceful nature of the community.
To aid their investigation, police have released images of several vehicles that may have been involved in the incidents.
“We believe anyone travelling in those vehicles may have witnessed at least part of what unfolded that night, and their information could help advance the investigation,” stated Chatland.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Aurora OPP detachment or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
The investigation is ongoing.
