Thu Sep 26 15:05:00 UTC 2024: ## Arab Leaders Condemn Israeli Actions, but Limited in Ability to Act

**Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Arab leaders are increasingly vocal in their condemnation of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, accusing the country of genocide and pushing the region towards all-out war.**

Following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, several Arab leaders, including Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, have spoken out against the civilian casualties and compared the situation in Gaza to genocide. A joint statement from Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq warned that Israel’s actions are leading to a wider conflict.

However, despite the strong rhetoric, experts believe Arab leaders are limited in their ability to significantly influence the situation. Adel Abdel Ghafar, director of the foreign policy and security program at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, points out that Arab states have exhausted their options, having tried various diplomatic channels and condemnations, with little effect on Israel’s actions.

The region’s reliance on the US for support and influence also restricts their ability to take more forceful action. Khaled Elgindy, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, argues that Arab responses to the situation are dictated by their relationship with the US rather than with Israel. While Arab leaders could potentially leverage existing peace agreements, trade deals, and energy agreements with Israel, they fear backlash from Washington.

Further complicating the situation is the fact that many Gulf states view Iran as a more significant threat than Israel. Their focus on countering Iranian influence limits their willingness to take action against Israel, even if it means risking further escalation.

While Arab leaders are united in condemning Israel’s actions, they ultimately lack the leverage to force a ceasefire. Experts believe the US holds the key to resolving the conflict, as it is the primary provider of diplomatic support and weapons to Israel.
