Thu Sep 26 13:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Anti-Trans Laws Linked to Increased Suicide Attempts Among Teens: Study

A new study published in the journal *Nature Human Behavior* reveals a disturbing correlation between anti-transgender laws targeting minors and a significant increase in suicide attempts among transgender and gender nonconforming youth. The research, conducted by The Trevor Project, analyzed data from 61,240 young people across 19 states, comparing suicide attempt rates before and after the enactment of these laws.

The study found a sharp rise in suicide attempt rates following the passage of anti-trans legislation. Two years after a law was implemented, the likelihood of a past-year suicide attempt among 13-17-year-olds was 72% higher than before the law’s enactment. While a small increase was observed shortly after the laws were passed, the most dramatic rise occurred two to three years later.

The study, which controlled for various confounding factors, establishes a causal link between these discriminatory laws and increased suicide risk. This research comes at a time when numerous states have passed similar laws restricting access to gender-affirming healthcare, bathroom usage, and participation in sports for transgender youth.

The study’s findings echo the harrowing experiences of families impacted by these laws. Kentucky Senator Karen Berg, whose transgender son died by suicide in 2022, poignantly described the devastating impact of these policies during the debate over her state’s anti-trans bill.

The researchers emphasize that the increased suicide risk is not inherent to transgender youth but rather a consequence of societal mistreatment and stigmatization, exacerbated by discriminatory laws. They urge lawmakers to reconsider these policies and prioritize the well-being of all young people.

The study, which is the first of its kind to conclusively link anti-trans laws to increased suicide attempts, underscores the urgent need for supportive and inclusive policies that protect the mental health of transgender and gender nonconforming youth.
