**MONTREAL, Sept. 26, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)** – Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada will host the 4th International Symposium on Arthrogryposis from September 28 to October 1 at the Hôtel Omni Mont-Royal. This event, organized in collaboration with other Montreal pediatric centers, aims to bring together experts from around the world to discuss and advance understanding of this rare group of diseases.
Arthrogryposis, affecting approximately 1 in 3,000 children, manifests as joint stiffness present at birth. Individuals with the condition experience varying degrees of limb limitations, often impacting their daily activities. The symposium will cover approaches to treating the pathology and showcase the latest research projects.
Dr. Reggie Hamdy and Dr. Noémi Dahan-Oliel, co-chairs of the scientific and organizing committees, emphasize the need for knowledge sharing and networking to drive scientific progress and improve care for those living with arthrogryposis.
Luca “Lazylegz” Patuelli, a prominent advocate for people with rare diseases, will perform a dance show at the symposium, exemplifying the “can-do attitude” of those affected by this condition.
The Shriners Healthcare Network, with its Genomics Institute, is committed to understanding the genetic causes of rare diseases like arthrogryposis.
The event will also feature personal testimonies from patients and families, sharing their experiences and insights into the care they receive.
This symposium builds upon previous gatherings held in Birmingham, UK (2007), St Petersburg, Russia (2014), and Philadelphia, USA (2018), reflecting a growing global commitment to understanding and treating arthrogryposis.
