**New Delhi, India** – The Indian government has announced a significant increase in minimum wage rates for workers, effective from October 1, 2024. The revision, which includes an increase in the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), aims to help workers cope with the rising cost of living.

The new minimum wage rates, categorized based on skill level and geographical area, will see workers in sectors such as construction, loading and unloading, and security receive a daily wage of up to ₹1,035.

The revised rates are as follows:

* **Unskilled workers (Area A):** ₹783 per day (₹20,358 per month)
* **Semi-skilled workers (Area A):** ₹868 per day (₹22,568 per month)
* **Skilled, clerical, and watch & ward without arms (Area A):** ₹954 per day (₹24,804 per month)
* **Highly skilled and watch & ward with arms (Area A):** ₹1,035 per day (₹26,910 per month)

The Labour Ministry statement highlights the importance of this increase, particularly for those in the unorganized sector. The VDA is adjusted twice a year, based on the six-month average increase in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers.

This latest wage hike follows a previous revision in April 2024. The government’s move is expected to provide much-needed relief to workers facing increased living costs.
