Seven Metropolitan Police officers, including five currently serving and two who have resigned, will face a gross misconduct hearing next month for accessing files relating to the murder of Sarah Everard.
Everard, a 33-year-old woman, was tragically killed by Met officer Wayne Couzens in March 2021. The officers under investigation, including PCs Myles McHugh and Clare Tett, Det Con Tyrone Ward, Det Sgt Robert Butters, and Sgt Mark Harper, as well as former officers trainee Det Con Hannah Rebbeck and Insp Akinwale Ajose-Adeogun, allegedly accessed police systems related to Everard’s case without proper policing justification.
The investigation found that the officers accessed the information between March 5th and 15th, 2021, some on multiple occasions. The Met has stated that the allegations are serious enough to warrant dismissal and that they will not be commenting further until after the hearing.
The misconduct hearing highlights the ongoing concerns about accountability and transparency within the Metropolitan Police. This case follows a string of controversies, including Couzens’s conviction for Everard’s murder, which has raised questions about the force’s ability to handle sensitive cases and prevent misconduct.
