Thu Sep 26 14:53:30 UTC 2024: ## Palestinian President Calls for Israel’s UN Membership Revocation

**UNITED NATIONS** – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has called for Israel to be stripped of its United Nations membership, accusing the country of failing to uphold its commitments to UN resolutions, specifically those relating to a two-state solution and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Abbas asserted that Israel’s continued refusal to implement UN Resolutions 181 and 194 disqualifies it from UN membership. Resolution 181, he explained, outlined the 1947 partition plan for Palestine, while Resolution 194 guarantees the right of return for Palestinians displaced during the 1948 War of Independence.

Abbas further criticized the US for obstructing Palestine’s bid for full UN membership. “How could the United States insist on depriving our people” of this fundamental right? he questioned.

His statement comes amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began in October 2023. Abbas condemned both Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and its recent actions against Lebanon, equating the latter to “a war of genocide.”

Abbas’s call for Israel’s UN expulsion is a significant escalation in the conflict. It remains to be seen if this proposal will gain traction among UN member states.
