**Kyoto, Japan** – Nintendo is doubling down on its unique approach to gaming, emphasizing its desire to remain distinct from industry trends, particularly the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI).
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer behind franchises like Mario and Zelda, stated that Nintendo’s approach isn’t simply contrarianism. “It really is trying to find what makes Nintendo special,” Miyamoto said. He noted that when technologies like AI become popular, everyone tends to follow the same path, but Nintendo prefers to carve its own way.
This stance echoes a previous statement from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who in a July investor Q&A expressed caution regarding generative AI’s potential impact on intellectual property rights.
Nintendo’s history demonstrates its reluctance to jump on industry bandwagons. While exploring virtual reality in 2016, the company ultimately chose not to pursue it, opting instead for its unique approach to interactive experiences.
“If we do the exact same thing as everyone else, we’re bound to die because we are smaller than them,” said Philippe Lavoué, General Manager of Nintendo France, in a 2018 interview.
By emphasizing innovation and staying true to its core values, Nintendo continues to demonstrate its commitment to crafting unique and engaging experiences for players, even when faced with the allure of mainstream trends.
