**LOS ANGELES, CA** – James Cameron, producer of the latest Terminator installment, “Dark Fate”, has defended the film as a worthy third entry in the franchise despite its lukewarm reception. In an interview with Empire magazine, Cameron acknowledged the film’s box office disappointment but maintains it was a “legit sequel” to his original films, aimed at a “granddad” generation who grew up with the iconic Terminator movies.
“Our problem was not that the film didn’t work. The problem was, people didn’t show up,” Cameron said, adding that the film’s failure to attract a younger audience was a miscalculation on his part.
“Dark Fate”, which reunited Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, was critically acclaimed, but ultimately failed to resonate with a wider audience. Despite this, Cameron maintains its quality and places it firmly as a third-place contender behind his own “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”.
The film, directed by Tim Miller, disregarded the events of the other sequels, focusing solely on the original two films. It featured a new generation of characters, including Natalia Reyes as Dani Ramos, a young woman targeted by Terminators, and Mackenzie Davis as Grace, a cybernetically enhanced soldier.
While “Dark Fate” may not reach the heights of its predecessors, it remains a significant addition to the Terminator universe and a noteworthy attempt to revitalize the franchise.
Cameron’s comments come amidst the release of a new Terminator anime series on Netflix, “Terminator Zero”, which has been met with positive reviews. The 40th anniversary of the original “Terminator” is also being marked with a 4K release of the film.
