A TikTok user has sparked widespread concern after sharing her horrifying experience with popular dog-sitting app Rover. McKenzie Leigh Comfort (@mckenzieleighc) alleges that a sitter she hired through the app lost her two dogs for three days, and then attempted to deceive her by claiming they had been rehomed.
Comfort, who had previously used Rover with neutral to positive results, hired a sitter to care for her dogs while she and her partner were away. After initially receiving photos of her dogs, communication with the sitter became sporadic and suspicious. When Comfort finally contacted the sitter to arrange for her dogs’ return, she received a bizarre text message claiming the dogs had been given to a new owner.
Panicked, Comfort contacted Rover and was shocked to discover that the sitter was already banned from the app and had an active police investigation against them. Comfort filed a police report and began searching for her missing dogs. She eventually found them, thankfully unharmed, after they were discovered wandering the streets of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Through online groups, Comfort learned that the sitter, identified as Gina and Gabe, were known for losing dogs and had a history of such incidents. Comfort believes the sitters had lost her dogs five days prior and concocted the rehoming story to cover up their negligence.
This chilling story has sent shockwaves through the dog-owning community, with many users sharing their own negative experiences with Rover and similar apps. Comments on Comfort’s video reveal stories of dogs being left in crates for extended periods, receiving inadequate care, and even suffering injuries while in the sitter’s care.
Following Comfort’s experience, users are urging caution and recommending dog owners build their own network of trusted pet sitters instead of relying solely on apps. Rover has yet to comment on the incident. This latest story serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with using these services, and highlights the need for thorough vetting and caution when choosing a sitter for your beloved pet.
