**By Marty Cagan, Founder and Partner at SVPG**

Product development, long seen as a blend of art and science, has been further illuminated by Rick Rubin’s “The Creative Act: A Way of Being,” according to product expert Marty Cagan.

While Cagan has always recognized the artistic element in engineering, design, and solutions, he acknowledges his previous bias towards the scientific approach. Rubin’s book, a surprise bestseller, provided a fresh perspective on the creative process that Cagan believes is highly relevant to product development.

“The biggest surprise was the language Rubin uses,” Cagan shares. “He frames creative work as ‘problems to solve,’ a familiar concept in product development. He then discusses ‘discovery’ – a series of experiments exploring ideas – followed by ‘craft’ – the finalization of the work.”

Cagan highlights that “The Creative Act” unveils how closely the worlds of art and product development mirror each other. Rubin’s perspective on artists as creators resonates deeply with product teams, whose work inherently involves creation.

“The key difference lies in the motive,” Cagan explains. “Artists create primarily for self-expression, while we in product development create to deliver value.” However, he points out that companies like Apple demonstrably infuse their products with the founder’s values, bridging the gap between artistic expression and product value.

Cagan encourages product, design, and engineering professionals to read “The Creative Act” to gain a deeper understanding of their own creative process and the link between art and product development.

“This book is a once-in-a-decade read,” he concludes, “offering valuable insights for anyone involved in creating products.”
