**Shanghai, China -** Chinese entertainment giant iQIYI announced its strategic expansion into short-form dramas, unveiling plans to launch over 300 new titles across various genres within the next year. This move, announced at the company’s iJOY Conference in Shanghai, aims to capitalize on the surging popularity of Chinese content, particularly in Southeast Asia, where C-dramas are now a top choice for viewers.
The company’s new ‘Micro-Drama Theater’ and ‘Short-Drama Theater’ will be available exclusively to paid subscribers, offering concise storytelling and short-form content tailored to a diverse audience. These initiatives follow the success of iQIYI’s acclaimed ‘Light On Theater’, known for its high-quality suspense series.
iQIYI is also leveraging AI technology to enhance its user experience. The company is developing Taodou 2.0, an intelligent assistant that integrates advanced language models, offering personalized recommendations, enhanced search functions, and improved customer support.
“We are committed to premium production and creativity,” stated Yu GONG, Founder and CEO of iQIYI. “These offerings are not just low-budget online series; they reflect our dedication to further innovation.” iQIYI allocates over 70% of its revenue to content producers, demonstrating its commitment to quality.
The expansion into short-form dramas also unlocks new opportunities for brand marketing. “Short-drama marketing is specifically crafted to engage targeted audiences,” explained Senior Vice President Gang WU.
iQIYI’s global ambitions are evident in its international expansion. Half of the content on iQIYI International currently consists of Chinese productions, with the platform also featuring dramas from Thailand, Japan, and Korea.
This strategy coincides with the growing global appetite for Chinese dramas. C-dramas have gained substantial popularity in Southeast Asia, becoming the top choice for viewers, according to the latest Q1 2024 data from AMPD.
“The marketing value of C-drama content in overseas markets has increased significantly,” noted Gong. “Content creators should prioritize developing offerings tailored for global audiences.”
iQIYI’s commitment to premium content is reflected in its diverse slate of upcoming dramas, including sequels to popular IPs such as ‘Tales of the Tang Dynasty’. The company is also expanding into new genres, including documentaries, films, animation, kids’ content, and sports.
With its strategic focus on short-form content, AI integration, and global expansion, iQIYI is poised to further solidify its position as a leading entertainment platform, captivating audiences worldwide.
