**Chennai, India:** Star Health and Allied Insurance, a leading Indian health insurer, is facing a major cybersecurity incident involving the alleged leak of sensitive customer data, including medical records, phone numbers, and addresses.
The incident came to light after a hacker group created Telegram bots and a website to disseminate the stolen data, which reportedly also included ID card copies and tax details. The group allegedly shared screenshots of conversations between Star Health’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and themselves.
Star Health has confirmed that a forensic investigation is underway. In response to the leak, the company filed a lawsuit against Telegram for hosting the bots and Cloudflare for hosting the hacker group’s website. The court issued injunctions to both companies to restrict the sharing of Star Health data.
The hacker group’s website was inaccessible from some internet providers in India, though it was accessible from others. India’s CERT-In has stated they are “already in process of taking appropriate action.”
Star Health has over 170 million policyholders and claims to have processed over $3.6 billion in claims. The company has over 14,000 hospitals in its network and over 850 branch offices across India.
Telegram and Cloudflare did not respond to requests for comment.
The incident underscores the growing threat of cyberattacks against major companies and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. It also highlights the challenges of combating data leaks across different online platforms.
