Fri Sep 27 16:25:23 UTC 2024: ## India Raises Minimum Wage for Unorganized Sector Workers
**New Delhi, India** – India’s central government announced a significant increase in minimum wage rates for workers in the unorganized sector, effective from October 1, 2024. This adjustment is part of the biannual revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), which accounts for the rising cost of living.
The highest minimum wage rates apply to workers in **Area A**, which encompasses regions with high costs of living and robust economic conditions. This classification, which also includes Areas B and C based on economic factors, ensures that wages reflect the local economic realities.
The wage hike will benefit workers in various sectors including construction, loading and unloading, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture. The Ministry of Labour & Employment highlighted that this increase is crucial for helping workers manage their expenses amidst rising inflation.
This move is seen as a significant step toward improving the livelihoods of workers in India’s unorganized sector. By aligning wages with regional economic conditions, the government aims to provide essential support and foster a more equitable work environment across different areas and skill levels.
