Thu Sep 26 14:09:44 UTC 2024: ## India and China Make Progress on Border Dispute, But Challenges Remain

**Beijing, China -** India and China have reportedly made significant progress in resolving their border dispute in eastern Ladakh, according to the Indian Express newspaper. The two countries have been locked in a tense standoff since 2020, when a deadly clash between their troops in the remote Himalayan region resulted in casualties on both sides.

After over 30 rounds of high-level talks, both sides have reportedly agreed to explore a solution based on their positions prior to the 2020 standoff. This could involve Indian troops regaining access to previously blocked patrol points and buffer zones along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a poorly defined 3,500 km border in the Himalayas.

Discussions are also underway to address issues related to Arunachal Pradesh, a disputed area in the eastern sector of the border. China has previously objected to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh and has attempted to rename several places in the state.

A 22nd round of Corps Commander-level talks is expected to be held soon to finalize the details of troop deployment and establish a timeline for actions based on mutual agreements.

Despite these developments, the two countries remain on high alert with over 50,000 troops stationed on each side of the LAC.

India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has stated that while “much of the disengagement” has been achieved, some patrolling issues still need to be resolved. Jaishankar has also expressed India’s commitment to improving ties with China during Prime Minister Modi’s third term.

While the progress is encouraging, the ongoing tensions and the unresolved issues related to Arunachal Pradesh suggest a complex and potentially lengthy path towards a lasting resolution.
