**Tokyo, September 26, 2023** – In a historic move, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) destroyer JS Sazanami sailed through the Taiwan Strait on September 25, marking the first time a Japanese naval vessel has traversed the strategically important waterway. The move comes as Japan seeks to counter China’s increasingly assertive military posture in the region, particularly around Japanese territory.
The JMSDF’s passage through the Taiwan Strait aligns with similar freedom-of-navigation exercises conducted by other Western nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany.
The move was met with strong opposition from China. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang stated that Beijing “firmly opposes provocative acts that undermine China’s sovereignty and security,” while Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian accused Japan of having “political intentions” and urged Tokyo to “abide by its promises, be careful in its words and actions on the Taiwan issue, and not disrupt Sino-Japanese relations or the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
Japan’s decision to finally send a naval vessel through the Taiwan Strait comes after years of hesitation due to concerns about provoking China. However, recent incidents involving Chinese military aircraft violating Japanese airspace, and the presence of a Chinese aircraft carrier close to Japanese shores, have reportedly led Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to believe that such a move is necessary to safeguard peace and stability in the region.
The Taiwan Strait is a vital sea lane and a key flashpoint in the Asia-Pacific region. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and has not ruled out using force to bring it under its control. The increased military activity in the region has heightened tensions between China and the United States, which has pledged to defend Taiwan’s independence.
The JMSDF’s move is a significant development in the ongoing strategic rivalry between China and the United States, and it remains to be seen how Beijing will respond. The security environment in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to remain volatile in the coming months, with the incoming Japanese prime minister facing significant diplomatic and security challenges.
