Thu Sep 26 19:54:26 UTC 2024: ## India Issues Mpox Action Plan After First Case of Highly Transmissible Strain
**New Delhi, India:** Following the confirmation of the first case of the Mpox Clade 1b strain in India, the Union Health Ministry has issued a nationwide advisory urging states and union territories to implement measures to combat the further spread of the virus. The 38-year-old man from Kerala, who had recently returned from the UAE, is currently stable.
The Health Ministry emphasized the need for heightened awareness campaigns regarding the virus, its transmission, and preventive measures. It also stressed the importance of reviewing public health preparedness at all levels, particularly at health facilities.
The advisory further instructs states to adhere strictly to treatment guidelines, including isolation of suspected Mpox patients and strict infection control measures. Additionally, positive samples from suspected patients should be sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for genome sequencing to determine the specific clade.
The Mpox Clade 1b strain is considered more virulent and transmissible than other strains and was responsible for the World Health Organization’s declaration of a public health emergency of international concern last month.
With 36 ICMR-supported labs across the country and three validated commercial PCR kits approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India is well-equipped for diagnostic testing.
The Health Ministry’s proactive measures aim to contain the spread of the virus and prevent further cases. It remains crucial for individuals to be aware of the symptoms and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
