**New Delhi, [Date]** – The central government has announced a significant increase in minimum wage rates for workers across various sectors, effective from October 1, 2024. This move, facilitated through a revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), is aimed at aiding workers, particularly those in the unorganized sector, cope with the rising cost of living.
The revised wages will benefit workers in sectors including construction, loading and unloading, security, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture, all categorized under central sphere establishments.
The new rates are structured based on skill levels – unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled – and further differentiated by geographical regions classified as Areas A, B, and C.
For example, in Area A, unskilled workers in construction and cleaning will now earn Rs 783 per day, amounting to Rs 20,358 per month. Semi-skilled workers will see their daily wage increase to Rs 868, translating to Rs 22,568 per month. Skilled and clerical workers will earn Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month), while highly skilled workers and armed security personnel will receive Rs 1,035 per day, totaling Rs 26,910 per month.
This is the second wage adjustment in 2024, following a previous update in April. The government revises the VDA biannually, in April and October, based on fluctuations in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers.
