French President Emmanuel Macron has thrown his weight behind India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), joining a growing chorus of international support. During his address at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, Macron advocated for a reformed UNSC that includes Germany, Japan, Brazil, two African nations, and India as permanent members.
Macron emphasized the need for the UN to adapt to the changing global landscape, stressing that the current structure of the Security Council is no longer representative and hinders its effectiveness. He proposed expanding the Council and limiting the veto power of permanent members in cases of mass atrocities.
Echoing Macron’s sentiment, Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font also called for India’s inclusion, proposing a deadline for UNSC reform by the UN’s 80th anniversary. US President Joe Biden has also voiced support for India’s bid, reaffirming Washington’s commitment during his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Russia, too, has continued to back India’s aspiration for a permanent seat, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasizing the need for greater representation of developing countries in the UNSC.
The growing consensus among world leaders underscores the need for a reformed UNSC that reflects the contemporary global order and ensures more inclusive and effective international governance. This development signals a significant step towards potentially realizing India’s long-held ambition for a permanent seat on the UN’s most powerful body.
