Sony’s recently announced sequel to the acclaimed *Ghost of Tsushima*, *Ghost of Yotei*, has stirred controversy amongst gamers after revealing a new female ronin named Atsu, who takes on the “Ghost” persona.
Atsu’s introduction has sparked backlash from some players who are unhappy with a female protagonist. In response, former Sony executive Shawn Layden, previously chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, issued a blunt message on social media.
Responding to criticism about Atsu, Layden simply stated: “It’s a game. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.” He further suggested that those unhappy with the game’s direction could even create their own game.
Layden’s message highlights the often-contentious nature of game development and its response to changing demographics and expectations. While some players have voiced displeasure at Atsu’s inclusion, others have pointed out the long history of female protagonists in Japan-centric games, such as *Tenchu: Fatal Shadows* and *Red Ninja: End of Honor*.
*Ghost of Yotei* is expected to release on PlayStation 5 in 2025, with gameplay trailers yet to be released.
