**Agadez, Niger, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its winding alleys, ancient mosque, and ochre earthen houses, is facing severe damage from unprecedented flooding.**
The flooding, a result of unusually heavy rains brought on by climate change, has already caused the collapse of over 100 houses and walls. The iconic Grand Mosque, with its 27-meter-tall minaret, has also been affected, with its pillars weakened by the water.
“Climate change causing heavy rains represents a danger for the old town… Symbolic monuments are still ‘in an acceptable state’ but ‘homes and other monuments of historic and religious value are under threat’,” warned town curator Ali Salifou.
The flooding comes at a time when Agadez, once a popular tourist destination, is already facing a decline in tourism due to jihadist attacks in the region. With dwindling tourism revenue, the town is struggling to maintain its historic buildings and infrastructure.
“With the little money you get here and there, you can’t maintain the buildings and leave your family with empty stomachs,” said Alhassane Manou, a former souvenir seller.
The UNESCO designation, intended to boost tourism and conservation efforts, has failed to deliver the expected benefits, according to former mayor Abdourahamane Tourawa. He stressed the need for “projects allowing them to safeguard and maintain this architectural jewel.”
Beyond the immediate threat of flooding, Agadez is also facing overcrowding and a lack of proper waste management due to its role as a transit hub for migrants heading to Europe.
While some conservation efforts are underway, funded by the European Union, the town’s future remains uncertain.
“Those who don’t want us to use modern materials in the old town must commit to come and save the town,” implored Abou Said Ahmed, district leader of Akanfaya. “The sealing on the houses is no longer good enough.”
The situation highlights the urgent need for greater international support and investment to protect Agadez’s cultural heritage and ensure its future.
