Thu Sep 26 14:02:18 UTC 2024: ## New York Mayor Eric Adams Indicted on Corruption Charges

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on five public corruption charges, including wire fraud, bribery, and soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals. Federal agents executed a search at his official residence Thursday morning as part of the investigation.

The charges stem from an investigation into Adams’ dealings with six foreign governments: Turkey, China, Israel, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. Adams vehemently denies any wrongdoing, calling the charges “entirely false, based on lies” and vowing to fight the accusations.

The indictment marks a significant blow to Adams’ tenure as mayor. Elected in 2021 on a tough-on-crime platform, he positioned himself as a future leader of the Democratic Party. However, his time in office has been marked by controversy, including unpopular policies, a penchant for grandstanding, and a recent wave of resignations within his administration.

Following the indictment, calls for Adams to resign have intensified, including from New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She stated, “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City. For the good of the city, he should resign.”

If convicted, Adams would become the first sitting mayor of America’s largest city to face criminal charges.
