**LOS ANGELES, CA** – Disney is taking a hard line against password sharing across households, introducing a paid “Extra Member” add-on for those who want to continue using the same account outside of their primary residence. The move, which follows a limited test in select markets, officially launches in the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.
Disney defines a “household” as a collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence and used by residents. Family members outside of this household who wish to continue using the same Disney+ account must either purchase their own subscription or pay for the “Extra Member” add-on.
The add-on costs an extra $6.99 per month for Disney Basic subscriptions and $9.99 per month for Disney+ Premium. Users can only add one “Extra Member” per account, and the add-on account must be used by someone aged 18 or older. It is also limited to one device at a time and requires the Extra Member to reside in the same country as the main account holder.
As an alternative, Disney offers users the option to transfer their profile to a new subscription, preserving settings like watch history.
This new crackdown on sharing comes at a time when Disney+ is set to raise its prices by $2 per month or $20 per year in October.
Similar moves to curb password sharing have been implemented by other streaming giants like Netflix, which saw a 102% increase in signups following its own crackdown.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users expressed their frustration and announced plans to cancel their subscriptions, while others voiced their support for the move, arguing that it is necessary to recoup lost revenue.
