Thu Sep 26 15:00:06 UTC 2024: ## Disney+ Cracks Down on Password Sharing, Introduces Paid Extra Memberships

**Starting this week, Disney+ will charge extra fees for anyone sharing their account password with someone outside their household.** This move, dubbed “Paid Sharing,” mirrors a similar initiative by Netflix and aims to curb unauthorized account access.

**For each additional member added to your Basic plan, Disney will charge $6.99 per month, while Premium plan users will pay $9.99.** Extra members are defined as those who don’t live with the primary account holder or use a device associated with their primary residence. Existing profiles can also be transferred to new accounts.

Disney has been testing these account-sharing restrictions for almost a year and confirmed the official launch last month. However, unlike Netflix, which allows two extra members, Disney+ currently only allows one. Additionally, the option is unavailable for Disney Bundle subscribers or those billed through third parties.

**Travelers might encounter a message stating their TV is not part of the household.** This message can be resolved by selecting “I’m Away From Home” or “Update Household,” which will require a one-time passcode sent to the account’s associated email address.

The Paid Sharing program is now live in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. This comes ahead of a planned price hike on October 17th, which will increase the ad-supported Basic plan to $9.99 and the ad-free Premium plan to $15.99.

**Disney’s decision to monetize password sharing highlights the ongoing battle for streaming dominance.** As subscription costs continue to rise, companies are exploring new ways to maintain revenue and prevent unauthorized account access.
