**Hyderabad, India:** Jr NTR’s much-anticipated film, “Devara: Part 1,” has hit theaters, but the film has failed to deliver on its promise of an epic saga. Despite Jr NTR’s dual roles, Saif Ali Khan’s villainous turn, and Janhvi Kapoor’s debut in Telugu cinema, the film falls short of expectations.
The narrative, set in a fictional land called Yerra Samudram, follows Devara, a righteous leader who fights to protect his people from the corrupt Bhaira. The story, although predictable, manages to capture attention in the initial stages with its elaborate setting and action sequences. However, the second half falters, becoming convoluted and lacking in substance.
While Jr NTR delivers a commendable performance, his portrayal of Vara, Devara’s son, falls flat due to unconvincing character development. Saif Ali Khan, as the antagonist Bhaira, also fails to make a lasting impression, his character lacking the depth needed for a truly formidable villain. Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Thangam, is sadly underdeveloped, relegated to playing the love interest with little agency or purpose.
Despite the film’s flaws, director Koratala Siva attempts to inject humor and campiness, which works sporadically. The film’s grand finale, which promises an epic battle, ends up being a disappointment. The film’s ending, similar to “Baahubali,” sets up a sequel, but the film’s overall weakness raises concerns about the future of the franchise.
“Devara: Part 1” is a missed opportunity. While Jr NTR’s star power and the film’s initial spectacle draw audiences in, the weak plot, underdeveloped characters, and predictable narrative ultimately detract from the experience. The film, unfortunately, lives up to its title – “Devara” (meaning “God” in Telugu) – only in the sense that it promises more than it delivers.
