**Goma, DRC** – The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is teetering on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. Displaced people are caught in a brutal cycle of violence, forced to choose between overcrowded, under-resourced camps and returning to their villages where they face ongoing fighting and looting.
The conflict, fueled by rebel group M23, which has accused Rwanda of supporting, has caused the displacement of over 7 million people. The Congolese government is calling for international sanctions against Rwanda for its alleged role in destabilizing the country.
“This is a serious crisis that requires more international support,” stated Alex Vines, Africa program director at Chatham House. “The international community is largely indifferent to the unimaginable suffering in eastern Congo.”
While a ceasefire agreement between Congo and Rwanda was reached in August, it has not held, and violence continues. The situation is further complicated by a widespread mpox outbreak, with the DRC at its epicenter.
“It would be impossible to contain the virus in the camps for displaced people unless efforts are made to address the needs of the people and improve the appalling living conditions,” emphasized Tejshri Shah, director general of Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
The grim realities of the situation are painted by displaced individuals themselves. “We slept in churches. Since our return, we have been exposed to looting every night,” recounted one displaced woman, echoing the sentiments of many.
The dire conditions in the camps and the dangers in their villages create a heartbreaking dilemma for the displaced population. The conflict and mpox outbreak pose an unprecedented threat to their survival, and they are desperately in need of international aid and intervention.
