**New Delhi, October 1, 2024:** The Union government has announced a significant increase in minimum wages for agricultural and industrial workers across various sectors, effective from today. The revision, which aims to account for rising prices, will benefit workers in construction, loading and unloading, security, cleaning, mining, and agriculture.
The new minimum wage rates, determined under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, are categorized by skill level. Unskilled workers in sectors such as construction, cleaning, and loading/unloading will now earn a minimum of ₹783 per day or ₹20,358 per month, whichever is higher. Semi-skilled workers will receive a minimum of ₹868 per day or ₹22,568 per month, while skilled, clerical, and unarmed security personnel will earn a minimum of ₹954 per day or ₹24,804 per month. Highly skilled workers and armed security personnel will receive the highest minimum wage of ₹1035 per day or ₹26,910 per month.
The government adjusts these minimum wages twice a year, based on the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. This index tracks price changes in essential goods consumed by the workforce.
The last revision of minimum wages was implemented in April this year. The latest increase is expected to provide much-needed relief to workers facing the rising cost of living.
