Thu Sep 26 14:00:17 UTC 2024: ## Government Raises Minimum Wages for Workers, Effective October 1st

**New Delhi:** The Indian government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates for various sectors, effective October 1st, 2024. This move aims to provide relief to workers, particularly those in the unorganized sector, as they face rising costs of living.

The revised rates will benefit workers in fields like construction, loading and unloading, security, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture employed within central sphere establishments. The increase is based on a revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), which is adjusted twice yearly based on inflation.

The new minimum wage rates are categorized based on skill level (unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, highly skilled) and geographical area (A, B, and C). For instance, in area A, unskilled workers in construction and cleaning will now earn Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month), while highly skilled workers in security with arms will earn Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).

The decision comes as retail inflation for industrial workers has moderated to 2.15% in July, down from 7.54% in the same month last year. The Consumer Price Index-Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) has been steadily declining since February 2024.

This announcement signifies the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers and providing them with a living wage. The revised rates are expected to provide much-needed financial relief to those grappling with rising living costs.
