Fri Sep 27 14:38:57 UTC 2024: ## Pharmaceutical Companies Defend Quality After CDSCO Finds Substandard Drugs
**New Delhi:** A recent alert from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) revealed that 53 commonly used medicines failed quality tests, prompting several pharmaceutical companies to defend the quality of their products. The list of substandard drugs includes essential medications manufactured by leading companies like Torrent Pharma, Hetero Drugs, Alkem Laboratories, and Hindustan Antibiotics Limited.
Alkem Laboratories, in particular, has vehemently denied claims that batches of its antibiotic drugs Clavam 625 and Pan D were substandard. The company stated that a thorough investigation revealed that the samples collected by CDSCO were spurious and not manufactured by Alkem. This conclusion was reached based on discrepancies in physical appearance, color, and labeling between the CDSCO samples and Alkem’s actual production batches.
Alkem has submitted a response to CDSCO along with an assessment report confirming the spurious nature of the samples. The company further emphasized its commitment to the highest quality standards and cGMP practices. To combat the issue of spurious drugs, Alkem has introduced unique features and QR codes on its packaging for Pan-D and Clavam 625, allowing consumers to differentiate genuine products from counterfeit ones.
The CDSCO investigation highlights the importance of stringent quality control in the pharmaceutical industry. While Alkem has defended its products, the situation raises concerns about the circulation of substandard medications and the potential health risks they pose.
