A British tourist, Roland Cherry, has miraculously survived a brutal attack by a hippopotamus while canoeing in Zambia. The 63-year-old was on a five-week African safari with his wife when the hippo charged their boat, clamping its powerful jaws around his leg.
Cherry, speaking to Sky News, recounts how he dislocated his shoulder during the attack and was unable to escape the hippo’s grip. He was dragged underwater before the animal inexplicably released him.
Cherry managed to reach the shore, where he discovered his severely mauled thigh. Due to his life vest, he didn’t initially realize the full extent of his injuries, which included damage to his abdomen.
Cherry, who considers himself lucky to be alive, says one of the surgeons who operated on him admitted he’d never seen a survivor of a hippo attack before. Despite their prevalence in the region, hippopotamuses are known as the world’s deadliest large land mammals.
Cherry is expected to make a full recovery, highlighting the remarkable resilience of the human spirit in the face of nature’s most formidable creatures.
